Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
